HTS, HTEF, and Columbia University…

Dear HTS Community,

Columbia University Graduate School of Education, commonly called Teachers College, offers a cutting-edge language arts program called The Reading and Writing Project (TRWP). Over the summer months, our staff wrote a $10,000 grant to the HTEF for staff development. Experts from Teachers College have been to HTS on multiple occasions to train staff in TRWP and our teachers have been implementing this program since September. TRWP empowers young writers to develop an approach to writing that is personal, and consists of best practices as recognized by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as well as many education experts. Students’ work is self-selected and develops from a “seed idea” into a high-quality published work. As a result, our students’ writing has increased in both depth as well as breadth. Please note, this generous grant is in addition to our “perennial grants” such as Shakespeare Residency ($10,000), Circus Yoga ($6,000), Books @ Play ($6,000), Project BABES ($3,000), Art Department Grant ($4,000) and many others including the second half of the Sound and Lighting System Upgrades ($32,000) to the Matthew C. Sellitto Gymnasium and the Leveled Classroom Libraries ($25,000). These grants, combined with the SmartBoards ($47,000) and the Middle School Bricks Project ($25,000) totaled approximately $160,000.00 over the past twelve months!

Please join me in thanking the HTEF for their donations and, on behalf of the staff and students, we hope you will all continue to support their fundraising endeavors in the future.

Sincerely,

Alex Anemone

Vision Council – PARCC for Parents…

Dear HTS Community,

Beginning on Monday, March 2, students at HTS will join their peers in 12 states in taking a new standardized assessment – the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). This online assessment will be administered in our computer labs in March and again in April/May. The Vision Council will be hosting our third quarter meeting on Wednesday, February 11 at 7:00pm in the library/media center to discuss this in greater detail. This meeting – PARCC for Parents – will offer parents a longitudinal look at the history of standardized assessments in New Jersey as well as a side by side comparison of the PARCC and NJASK. Moreover, parents will leave with a better understanding of how they can assist their children on this exam. We hope to see you there.

Lastly, I would like to remind the entire HTS community about the Second Annual State of the Schools Address on Monday, February 23 at 7:30pm in the library/media center.

Sincerely,

Alex Anemone

Another PTO Grant plus SOTS-15…

Dear HTS Community:

On Wednesday, January 7, the PTO voted – unanimously – to fund new audio-visual upgrades for our students and staff. These systems (sound and lighting) will be used for plays and concerts and cost approximately $25,000! As always, we appreciate the unwavering support of the PTO and its membership. Donations such as these allow our school to provide that something extra special for our children. We look forward to using these systems at future events. Please note, this grant is in addition to 2014-2015 PTO grants such as Smartboard replacement ($30,000), Battle of the Books ($5,000), Creative Coders ($4,000) and various software applications and subscriptions such as Brain Pop and Scholastic Scope magazine ($7,000).

Please save the date: Monday, February 23, at the Harding Township School Board of Education meeting, I will be presenting my second annual State of the Schools Address. The meeting will be held in the HTS Library/Media Center and will begin at 7:30pm. We hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Alex Anemone
